First established in August of 1990, Shepherd University was originally known as Arizona Theological Seminary. It was originally located in Phoenix, Arizona. The name of Arizona Theological Seminary was changed to Shepherd University and the school was moved to Los Angeles, California in August 1998.
Shepherd University is presently registered and chartered under the law of California, verified by California Education Code as of March 29, 2000 with the Bureau for Private Post Secondary and Vocational Education. Shepherd University is a member of the Accrediting Commission International (ACI).
Under the new leadership of Rev. Dr. Richard Cornel S. Lee, as of July of the year 1999, Shepherd University has reorganized to provide four Theological Divisions and fifteen Departments of Theological Training Programs, and formed School of Music in December 1999. Shepherd University was built solidly through the pursuit of strong and conservative policy and does every effort to be an excellent university. The School of Language Arts was formed during the Spring Semester of 2001, Registered Nurse Job Placement Center and Computer Training School during the summer of 2001, the School of Engineering during the Spring Semester of 2002, and Music Conservatory and Social Service Center during the Fall Semester of 2002. As we are in the 21st century, important new changes are being addressed. In the 19th century, England exercised strong leadership in world missions when their political economical power was strong. In the 20th century, the American churches expanded their world mission as their political leadership grew. In the 21st century, it is predicted that Asian-Pacific nations will take their turn.
Therefore, the future leadership of the Korean-American church will be of great need as the future for the world mission unfolds. Shepherd University is committed in pastoral, mission, Christian education, music education, language education, engineering training, and theological training for the world mission consciousness.
Shepherd University is an academic and spiritual institution for a unique Christian education experience. Our main focus is to train leaders for ministry and in expanding spirituality to accomplish God's purposes. To do this, we seek and train faithful students, missionaries, teachers and leaders all around the world. Shepherd University has rapidly grown and expanded its academic programs, the number of administration members and Board of Trustees. Shepherd University is moving steadily and effectively to become one of the top Universities in the world.
