TOEIC
(TOEIC®: Test of English for
International Communication™)
The Measure of Success in the Global Workplace
This course is designed to prepare non-native speakers of English for
the listening, grammar, reading and writing sections of the TOEIC (Test
of English for a International Communication). Shepherd School of Language
Arts specializes in TOEFL and students will get the best preparation
for this test. Our qualified and experienced TOEIC instructors’ help
students get familiar with the examination format as well as develop
good test-taking strategies. The minimum target TOEIC overall grade
for students to get Visa Screen certificate is over 725 points.
TOEICR is a test of English proficiency that has been used as a standard
for establishing business English writing skills and spoken English
proficiency for nonnative English speaking people for more than 25 years.
Institutions, companies and government agencies worldwide use TOEIC as
a standard for establishing English proficiency in potential employees.
With more than 4.5 million test takers per year, the TOEIC test is the
standard for workplace English-language proficiency worldwide measures
the ability of non-native English-speaking examinees to use English
in everyday work activities.
The TOEIC test is a two-hour multiple-choice test that consists of 200
questions divided into 100 questions each in listening comprehension
and reading comprehension. Each candidate receives independent marks
for written and oral comprehension on a scale from 5 to 495 points.
The total score adds up to a scale from 10 and 990 points. The TOEIC
certificate exists in five colors, corresponding to achieved results:
orange (10-215), brown (220-465), green (470-725), blue (730-855) and
gold (860-990).
There are an estimated 3 million test takers in 60 different countries
per year, but most of those are Japanese and South Koreans. For that
reason, the TOEIC test is virtually unknown outside Japan , Korea and
some of their neighboring countries in East Asia . Its precursor,
the TOEFL test, has more international recognition and prestige. However,
things are gradually changing in Europe . (See below: TOEIC in Europe
)
The questions attempt to reenact international business environments and contain
vocabulary and usage that are not necessarily needed in everyday life. Even
a native speaker will find it hard to get full marks unless they have a good
educational background, which strongly suggests it is not a true test of English
communicative competence.
What's new about the new TOEICR test? One of ETS's most important missions
is to continuously validate its tests
by ensuring that content is aligned with purpose, and that fairness is maintained.
The new TOEICR test reflects our continuous pursuit of excellence in test development.
The improved TOEIC test assesses proficiency by aligning questions with everyday
language scenarios that happen in today's workplace. Tasks are more authentic.
Not all tasks have been changed ? but some tasks give test-takers the opportunity
to respond with language that is appropriate to the situation; in other words,
how would someone at work respond in this particular situation?
At the same time, ETS has maintained the integrity and quality of
the original TOEIC test. The scale and score range?5 to 495 for each
section of the test (listening and reading)?remains unchanged. The
difficulty range is the same. Many of the question types are the same
also.

How is the new test different? Listening section enhancements include four
major changes:
a.. a decrease in the number of photograph questions in Part 1
b.. the use of both recorded and written questions in Part 3 (conversations)
and Part 4 (short talks)
c.. a shift from individual questions to sets of questions in Part 3 (conversations)
d.. the use of different English accents, as spoken in the U.S. , Great
Britain , Canada and Australia Reading section enhancements include three major
changes:
a.. the elimination of Part 6 (error recognition questions)
b.. the addition of text completion questions (Part 6)
c.. the inclusion of reading sets of questions based on two inter-related
passages (Part 7)
One other change is the range of accents in the listening section
of the test. There are examples of a U.S. (North American) accent,
a Canadian accent, a British accent, and an Australian accent. The
accents are slight but they reflect types of English that are taught
and spoken in the international workplace. Hence, the TOEIC test is
more valid as a test of international communication.
